HIA Victoria Awards Finalist (highly commended) - Single Renovations & Additions Category 2024

MacFarland St, Brunswick

Vision: Nestled in a quiet corner of Brunswick's vibrant inner-city landscape, this early 1900s weatherboard home stands as a testament to history. Located within a designated heritage precinct, the family sought a full-scale renovation to transform their home into a modern retreat, where the elegance of its past would blend seamlessly with contemporary living.

Approach: The design strategy focused on crafting an open, airy ground floor, tailored for modern family living. Living and dining spaces were opened up to create a flowing, functional layout, while carefully retaining period details, including the original street façade, ornate fireplaces, and detailed cornicing. A newly added upper level introduced a private parents' suite, offering a peaceful sanctuary with sweeping views, while a separate two-level garage, studio, and home office were designed at the rear. The use of reclaimed red brick in these additions paid homage to the industrial heritage of the surrounding area, creating a subtle, yet meaningful connection to the site’s local history.

Outcome: This heritage-listed home has been skillfully revived for modern life, creating a harmonious blend of history and innovation. The result is a family home that celebrates its century-old roots while embracing a contemporary, elegant style, perfect for today’s urban lifestyle.

This renovated early 1900s weatherboard home in Brunswick beautifully merges heritage charm with modern design, creating a contemporary family sanctuary where past and present meet in seamless harmony.
