BELONGIL BEACH, BYRON BAY

Featured in House & Garden Australia and shortlisted for national IDEA awards (Interior Design Excellence Award).

Vision: Embracing beachfront views was the number one request from the owners of this Byron Bay property, followed by having privacy from the street and a beautiful outdoor living area with a pool. With three children, the owners also wanted four bedrooms and plenty of indoor living space. They were keen to have a dedicated studio/office to make working from home a breeze.

Approach: The property may be in a popular holiday location, but it still needed to be a functional family home. Therefore, we opted for an urban design but tailored it to suit the natural environment. With some curved edges, touches of timber, sandy-coloured concrete and plenty of glass for light, it seamlessly fits in. The home is private from the street, then opens up as you move through towards the pool and garden at the rear. Downstairs, it features the bedrooms and utility rooms, while upstairs the kitchen, dining and living space opens onto an entertainer’s balcony that soaks up the ocean views. At every opportunity, light and views have been captured — even in places where you might not expect.

Outcome: The family can enjoy a spacious four-bedroom home that is practical for daily life and work — but thanks to the beachfront views and pool, they can create a holiday vibe at any time they choose.

This brings an urban design to a coastal environment. It’s private from the street, but as you go through the house it opens up to embrace the beachfront views. We created outlooks from all of the rooms — even those that aren’t facing the beach.
